Kathryn Elizabeth Brooks, 70, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, with her daughters and sons-in-law at her side. Her strong finish marked the end of a 20-month battle with stage 4 lung cancer. Her determination to live for those she loved, her steadfast faith in God and his Word, and the love and prayers of family and friends kept her smiling and saying "God is good," even in the face of a tough diagnosis and the challenges that came with it. At her last appointment, she told her doctor not to worry about the outcome of her treatment, that God was in control and her future was a win-win.

A Memorial Service and reception will be held at 6:00 pm on Monday, June 17, at NorthPoint Church in Johnston, following a private family burial. Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice or NorthPoint Church.

"Little Kathy" was born in Phillipsburg, Kansas on May 3, 1949 to Glen and Naomi Gierhart, and moved to Hastings, Nebraska two years later. Growing up, Kathy loved to twirl and sing, read books and play games, and travel with her family to the Rocky Mountains every summer. She attended Sunday School and church camps, participated in the National Piano Guild, played violin in the school orchestra, competed in sewing and cooking for the 4-H club, and cheered on her class with the Hastings Tigers Pep Club. After high school, Kathy attended Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa and toured with the Faith Chorale. Kathy dedicated 25 years to working at Principal Financial Group and served countless hours in music and children's ministries at Ankeny Baptist Church and NorthPoint Church.

During college, Kathy met the love of her life, Edward Brooks, and they were married July 5, 1969. They celebrated 40 years of marriage before Ed passed away on April 17, 2010. Everything that brought Kathy joy as a child seemed to bring an even greater joy as a devoted mother and grandmother. She twirled and sang with her babies and grandbabies in her arms, read books to the little ones on her lap, and played endless games sitting cross-legged on the floor. She never imagined she would travel to so many places in the United States, South America, Europe and Asia. She most treasured the family's summer trips to Colorado to see her parents and her sisters and their families, to picnic in Estes Park and meander up Trail Ridge Road. Kathy adored her family and found her greatest joy in loving and serving them. She loved Jesus and passed along a deep abiding faith in God to her children and grandchildren, always encouraging them to live one day at a time.

Kathy is survived by her daughters Becky (James) Janni and Christy (Michael) Sainburg; grandchildren, Garrett, Grant and Courtney Crown and Andrew, Anna, Jacob, Joshua and Elizabeth Janni, mother Naomi Gierhart; sisters Glenda Sue Helmick and Deborah (Lorrin) Barth, brothers-in-law Stan (Jeanne) Brooks and Robert (Marcie) Brooks, and sister-in-law Kathy (Gary) Compton. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Brooks, her father Glen Gierhart, her father and mother-in-law Ernest and Wanda Brooks, and her brother-in-law Jim Helmick.

Special thanks from the family to Tracy Sarin and Drs. Robert Behrens and Robert Isaak and to everyone at the John Stoddard Cancer Center and Mercy Hospice Johnston.
