Gary Lee Richardson, M.D., FACS, 74, passed away February 20, 2019.

A visitation will be held 5 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 5th at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd)

Gary was born in Kellogg, IA November 10, 1944 to Leroy Richardson and Joy Faye Patterson. He was raised in Monroe Iowa and was a graduate of Monroe High School. Gary went on to attend Grinnell College and later graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School where he also did his internship specializing in general surgery in 1969. Gary married Phyllis Jane Fisher from Monroe on August 29, 1965 and had three children together.

He was a surgical resident at Sacramento Medical Center in Sacramento California and was a Major in the US Army for 2 years, stationed in Alabama. Gary held a private practice in Charles City, Iowa and was chief of surgery 1976-1992, later moving his family practice to Newton, Iowa where he was also chief of surgery for Skiff Medical Center 1992-2011.

Gary will be missed yet always remembered by his children and grandchildren. Gary was proud of his self-made medical career, putting himself through college and medical school. Gary had a love for history, travel and good food. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his constant learning and for his tireless work ethic. Gary had a great love for the outdoors and enjoyed gardening projects and bee-keeping.

Gary is survived by two children, Tori (Rob) Versteegh of Ankeny Iowa and Christopher (Anna) Richardson of Åstorp, Sweden; grandchildren, Zach and Bella Bayne (children of his eldest daughter Monica), Ellie and Tessa Versteegh, and Zoe and Lilly Richardson; brother, Dennis (Mary) Richardson of Cedar Rapids Iowa; and his two cats Diddy and Thomas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis and oldest daughter Monica.
