Ralph John Cory Jr, 82, passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2020. A visitation will be held 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Friday, May 15, 2020 at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held 3:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Church in Elkhart following the visitation. Burial will be at the Cory Grove Cemetery in rural Elkhart at a later date.

"John" was born at home "down on the bottom" in rural Farrar on August 1, 1937 to Ralph and Neva (Brown) Cory. He graduated from Farrar High school in 1955. He was married to Frances Gene Miller Norris in 1969 and together they raised their nine children in a home in rural Bondurant. Fran passed away in January, 2011.

John worked for many companies in the Des Moines area including the State of Iowa Dairy, Artistic Polishing, Emory Plating and Petroleum Maintenance. In 1985, he opened his own petroleum company, Cory's Petroleum maintenance. In 1997, John and Fran purchased the Skunk Valley Antique Mall in Newton and operated it until 2003. John then worked for Sportsmen's Warehouse as a shoe salesman where he made many good friends and loyal customers until the time of his illness.

John had a wide variety of interests including fishing, hunting, antiques (especially old gas pumps) and watching western movies. His Catholic faith was very important to him and he was a lifelong member of the St. Mary's Holy Cross Catholic church where he had served on the parish council. John was the Grand Marshal in the Elkhart Festival parade in 2019.

John is survived by his sister, Sharon (Bill) Dunbar of Elkhart; a brother, Patrick of rural Maxwell; nine children, Sheryl (Rick) Leydens of Eddyville, Susan (Joe) Pinkston of Pocola, Oklahoma, Ralph Douglas (Joanne) of Cambridge, Gordon Norris of South Boston, Virginia, Andrew (Lori) of Elkhart, Robert (Lisa) Norris of Nevada, Cindy (Ernie) Walker of Des Moines, Shelly Cory of Pocola, Oklahoma and David Norris of Toano, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. John had 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Neva; his wife, Fran; a sister-in-law, Marjorie; and a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Norris.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
