Love Emblem

Jean Shanks, age 85, was called home on Sept. 6, 2019, after a long illness. A graveside service will be held at Chariton Cemetery at 10:30 am, September 13, 2019, with burial to follow.
Jean's parents, James and Bertha Tighe welcomed her into the family on Nov. 2, 1933. Brothers Jimmy and Ed now had a little sister.
After graduating from Chariton High School, Jean held several positions in retail businesses. Jean married Ralph Shanks on March 10, 1957. They were blessed with two children, Tonya and Mark.
Jean and Ralph spent the early years of their marriage in Chariton, Iowa. They later moved to Ankeny, Iowa, for Ralph's job. During this time, Jean's family was her life's priority. Her granddaughters, Erin and Kate, were two of her greatest blessings. She loved spending time with the girls: visiting, making hot chocolate and mac and cheese, playing games, doing crafts, shopping and all things grandmas and granddaughters do.
Jean loved to do crafts and was exceptionally creative and talented. She was an avid reader and great cook. Jean was always ready to travel and Estes Park, Colorado, was one of her favorite places. She enjoyed being outdoors and was known to have gone squirrel hunting a time or two.
Jean is survived by her husband, Ralph Shanks, daughter, Tonya Krohn(Fred), son, Mark Shanks, granddaughters Erin Scanlan(Chuck) and Kate Shanks, brother, Ed Tighe, and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Animal Rescue League of Des Moines, Iowa.
