Leon W. Purscell, 64, of Altoona was called home August 21, 2016 to be with his Lord Jesus.
A celebration of life will be held 6:00 p.m., August 25, 2016 at Cornerstone church (410 17th Ave. S.W., Altoona)
Leon was born April 29, 1952 in Madison County Iowa to Lonnie and Leota Purscell, and he graduated from Winterset High School.
He went on to serve with the US Army for 9 years. During his service, he served in Germany, Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and Fort Sill, OK.
He married Joy Brobst August 19, 1973. As a couple, they made their home wherever he was stationed during his time with the service. Following his time in the service, they made their home in Des Moines where they raised their family.
Leon was baptized at Norwoodville Baptist Church.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and yardwork. He was a very competitive player of cards, board games, horseshoes, and bag toss, and was known for his jokes and pranks. He enjoyed spending time with family especially, his grandchildren who knew him as "Pop", Papa, or as Samantha would say, "Papa Uh-Uh".
A little known fact about Leon was that he was a faithful fan of the Young and Restless.
Leon is survived by his wife, Joy; children, Benjamin Jay, and Carrie Ann (John) Shannon; 6 grandchildren, Benjamin Reed, Samantha Kay, Taylor Ann, Andrew Jacob, Caleb James, and Katelyn Grace; 1 great-grand daughter, Tessie Christine; 2 sisters, Lois and LaVonne; 2 brothers, Lenard (Glenice) and Lester (Jean), and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and 5 siblings, Lorn, LaVern, Laurel "Butch", Linda, and Loretta.
