James Robert Kennedy, 75, passed away March 20, 2020 in his home after a short battle with cancer.

Jim was born in Iowa City, IA on May 26, 1944 to Robert and Mary Louise Kennedy. He graduated from City High in Iowa City in 1964. He attended the University of Iowa before joining the Navy in 1967 where he attained the rank of Radarman 3rd Class. In April of 1968 he married his wife, Margaret Steele, before shipping out to Vietnam on the U.S.S. King for the next three years. After leaving the Navy, Jim attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, graduating with a degree in Pharmacy in 1975.

Jim was the longtime pharmacist and owner of Sumner Pharmacy in Sumner, IA. He was a member of the Sumner American Legion. He also served on the board of Wilson Grove Cemetery and the Planning and Zoning Committee for the city of Sumner. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, cowboy action shooting, his horses, rebuilding old John Deere machinery, and the Friday Night Round Table.

Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret; his four children, Michael (Lynn), Matthew, Mary-Margaret Gabrielsson (Henrik), and William (Amanda); grandchildren, Madelyn, Joshua, Gabrielle, Grayson, and Adaline Kennedy and Rebecca and Benjamin Gabrielsson. He is also survived by his siblings, Richard (Cindy), David (Cristina), Patricia McBride-Fedder (Steve), Carol Keenen (Patrick); and nieces, nephews, cousins, and his faithful furbaby, Connor. He is preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Wesley Michael Kennedy.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Israel Hospice House in Ames, IA, a hospice of your choice, or Puppy Jake Foundation (providing and training service dogs for veterans).
