She was born in September 1935 to Raymond and Florence Porter. Jo married Barney Alleman on June 18, 1955 and they celebrated 65 loving years together this year.

Jo will be remembered by many as she worked for HyVee Drugtown for 40 years, providing decorating advice or helping people find the perfect gifts. She was a member of Lutheran Church of Hope in Ankeny, IA.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. (Barney) Alleman; daughters, Linda Alleman (Tim Flowers), and Teri Sommerlot (Dave); brother, David Porter (Judy); granddaughters, Katy Fukuda (Masaki), Liv Sommerlot, and Carly Sommerlot; and great-granddaughter, Sophie Fukuda.

I met JoAnn as a teenager in the 1970s when my mother and I shopped in Drug Town's jewelry and makeup area. As others noted here, she was interested in people and made you feel good. The gift/makeup/jewelry/clothing area at Drug Town in Ankeny was very nice. I suspect most of that credit was due to her.

Later I came to Drug Town during visits to my family and caught up with JoAnn. When Drug Town closed I was glad to run into JoAnn and her husband at Hy-Vee. I am so sorry that a fall put her in a care center and that COVID must have soon ended visits from family. Much, much sympathy to you now. Such a lovely lady.

The day President Kennedy was killed i pulled up in Ankeny to the drug store, Jo came out, got in the car and we shared tears over this loss. It was very comforting to me. We shared several vacations with Barney , Jo Teri and Linda, wonderful memories of a great ffuendship.

Jo was always so bubbly and friendly when my Mom and I would go to Drug Town. Our day was always better after we talked with Jo. She made my Mom feel so special, which is something neither of us would forget. I am so sorry for your loss, but may your many memories sustain you. Sharon Collmann Justice

Dear Linda, So sorry to hear about your Mom. I remember her as our bowling instructor in high school. You always had such a nice family! My sympathy to your family.

Barney, I am so sorry for your loss. The loss is much bigger than you imagine because the whole community knew JoAnn as a beautiful, kind, smiling, helper at Drug Town. It was so sad when she left after the new HYVEE opened because we could not stop by and see her. She was so fun and loving, non judgemental, and helpful to all.
Please know her family will be in my prayers.

My own memory is a pretty, pleasant, kind lady anytime I saw her at HyVee
More connection through friendship of our daughters. My daughter, Kim, passed away 5 years ago but the friendship of that group of gals is still precious to me.
My sympathy to the family. May the good memories and love comfort you.
Always, Pat

I am so sorry for your loss. Mrs. Alleman was my go to expert between 1974-1977 for all of those crazy hair mess ups whether it was due to perms or color. She knew the best fixes! She was a saint. Also, her and Barney were super supportive parents to our basket ball family. Rest In Peace

The wonderful Drug Town memories, of standing at the counter talking with Joyce, Becky and Jo. Then Steve would show up and tell me to go home so they could get back to work. Haha! Barney, your beautiful voice is also a wonderful memory. May she Rest In Peace and be remembered as one amazing woman!
