Tribute & Message From The Family

Roger Dale Cory, age 72, passed away August 31, 2020 in the ICU at Methodist Hospital of Covid-19. The visitation and funeral will be held at the Elkhart Christian Church (252 NW Washington Ave. Elkhart, Iowa). The visitation will be held Friday, September 4, 2020 from 4:00 -6:00 p.m. The funeral will be held Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 1 p.m. with the burial to follow at Elkhart Cemetery. There will be a virtual option on Saturday, September 5th if you are unable to attend in person. Masks are highly advised, and those attending the services must social distance.

Roger was born on the September 17, 1947, to Jack and Elaine Cory in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up in Elkhart, Iowa and graduated from North Polk High School. Roger then moved to Kansas to complete trade school for auto repair. Soon after he moved back to Iowa and pursued several careers before becoming a Pepsi repair man for the next 40 years.

Roger was a very spiritual man who enjoyed the company of his loved ones along with all the people he met. Roger was graced with a kidney transplant on New Year's Day 2013 that enabled him to enjoy several more years with his family. In 2014 he was honored with a year as Grand Chaplin of the Order of Eastern Star. He was a motorcycle and car enthusiast and had an appreciation for westerns. Roger was a pillar of the Elkhart community and spent his free time maintaining his pop machine and generously giving out pop to those who stopped.

After Roger retired from Pepsi, he missed the company of others, so he went back to work as a greeter at Walmart. He was always seen with a smile and kind words, whether it was family or a complete stranger, until the day he died. Roger was an angel on Earth and God gets to have him back.

Roger is survived by his mother, Elaine; and other family and friends. He is joined in death with father, Jack; brother, Randy; first wife, Doris; and second wife, Paula.

One of my favorite memories was how surprised my friends were when I could simply walk up to the Pepsi guyin high school and get a free pop. It was even better when they realized the guy in Elkhart with the soda machine was my very nice uncle. You were always considerate and had a contagious smile. Rest In Peace with Uncle Randy and grandpa Jack.

ROGER

God looked around his garden and found an empty place
He then looked down upon the Earth and saw your tired face
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest
God's garden must be beautiful he always takes the best
He knew that you were suffering he knew that you would never get well on earth again
He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb
So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered "Peace be thine"
It broke our hearts to lose you but you didnt go alone
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.

Rest in peace Roger! Your cousin Linda

I met Roger at Walmart and later found out he was the man who has the famous "pop tree" in Elkhart. I always made sure when I went to Walmart to go in the south doors because that's usually where he was at. Occasionally he'd fool me and I'd have to go to the other end. He always greeted me with a huge smile and a hug. (That was before Covid). I worked a sweet corn stand in the summers and would drop some off to Roger every now and then. I loved to see him smile. I don't know of anyone who didn't love him. Talking to him was such a pleasure. I moved out of Elkhart 2 years ago and totally lost contact with him but his smile and zest for life will be with me forever. Rest in peace my dear friend. We'll chat again when I meet you in heaven.
