Rita Mae (McColloch) Cousins was born February 12, 1961 in Forest City, Iowa to Dale and Deanna McColloch. Rita grew up and graduated from Forest City High School. Upon graduation Rita attended Waldorf College also in Forest City, earning her AA Degree. She then attended University of Northern Iowa (UNI), in Cedar Falls graduating with her B.A. Degree in Social Work in May 1983.

Upon graduation from UNI Rita returned to Forest City to work at North Central Human Services. A facility for intellectual disabled children and young adults. Rita dedicated over 25 years working at these two organizations.

While attending UNI she met Scott Cousins of Clinton, Iowa. Rita and Scott united in marriage in Forest City, July 22, 1989. They were blessed to have a son, Zachary Scott Cousins.

Rita enjoyed being outdoors, working in the yard, running, walking, aerobics, shopping, and concerts. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. Since her cancer diagnosis, spending time with her granddaughter Malibu Mae (Mally Mae) was an especially special joy in her life.

The family wishes to sincerely thank oncologist/surgeon Dr. Steven Elg and his team, Kathy, Christine, Darla, and Nikki; for the care and passion they gave to Rita over the past four years. A thank you to Dr. Hendrickson and her team at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. I am so very sorry to learn of Rita's passing. I worked with Rita on the scrapbook albums for Scott, Zach and Malibu that she was so determined to have completed before her passing. Rita's love for her family was so evident and so strong and I could tell drove her to fight as hard as she could, and to make the most of every day she had on earth. When we would meet to work on the albums, I would try to think of anything to say to make her feel better but in truth she was the one who was such a blessing to me. I had a limited amount of time and role with Rita, but her passing is having a huge impact on me. I can only imagine what a giant hole she has left in her loved ones lives. My prayers are with you all. She was one in a million. Proverbs 3:15 She is more precious than rubies. Joni Stark

Please accept our deepest sympathy for the loss of Rita. She was always so incredibly kind. Our sons met in Cub Scouts years ago, and I always enjoyed visiting with her.
