Tribute & Message From The Family

Jon Wylie Ramsey, 89 of Ankeny, Iowa passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019. A Celebration Of Life service will be held at 3:00pm on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. A visitation with the family will be at 2:00pm until the time of the service. Everyone is welcome to join the family for a light meal at VFW 9662 in Des Moines following the ceremony.
Jon was born on February 10, 1930 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Frank and Harriette (Wylie) Ramsey. After growing up on a farm in Gilman, Iowa and playing catcher on the high school baseball team, Jon couldn't wait to enlist in the Navy. He spent years as an aircraft electrician aboard the USS Philippine Sea and loved to tell stories of his proud Navy days. Jon was active with his VA-115 squadron and a lifetime member of the VFW.
After returning home, Jon and his family took up residence in Des Moines, Iowa. There he enjoyed coaching little league for his sons teams and later playing softball with them on the IBEW 347 team. One of his favorite stories is about the year they went undefeated. Jon worked hard and played hard while raising his family in Des Moines and Ankeny. Through the years Jon worked on many projects throughout the Des Moines area his last one being the wiring of the 801 Grand building.
Jon retired from Baker Electric in 1992 and moved to "God's Country" in northern Minnesota. He loved his time living on Lake Vermillion working on his property, fishing, snowmobiling and "shooting the shit" with friends and neighbors. Jon loved having his children and grandchildren visit him on the lake, so he could show them all the Northwoods had to offer. In 2010, Jon returned to reside in Ankeny, Iowa finding new friends and making the rounds with old friends, as he never knew a stranger. Known for a quick smile and his teasing nature, Jon made friends easily and enjoyed swapping stories with anyone that had a few minutes and couple cups of black coffee. Family and friends will remember Jon fondly for the love he gave, the organization he insisted upon, and of course the extra crispy bacon!

He is survived by his children, Mike (Mary) Ramsey, Sheri Ramsey, Mark (Joanne) Ramsey, Tonya (Peter) Salvucci, Torie Holden, 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to VFW Post 9662, Des Moines, Iowa.

Everyone is welcome to join the family at VFW 9662 to swap stories and celebrate the life of Jon Ramsey.

Jon is a first cousin of mine. Very sorry to learn he has passed away. But I will always have happy memories of our years together.
In the summer, as children, my brother Jim Hollingsworth and I would visit our grandparents in Gilman, IA where Jon lived. He was always happy and smiling and good at thinking up things for us to do! Even as we all got older we were still good friends.
Although we haven't gotten together much recently, he was always on my mind. Kind of a second brother.
Mike, Mark or Tootie, please give me a call so I can know more about his failing health.
Holding you all in my mind, heart and prayers, Jo Wetherell
