Tribute & Message From The Family

Edward "Ed" Earl Hamilton passed away August 6, 2019. He was a loving husband, dad and grandpa and was called home at the age of 59. Ed was born in Ames, Iowa to William Charles Hamilton Sr. and Charlotte Ann (Dowty) Hamilton. He married the love of his life, Jolene (Brafford), his sweetheart since the 7th grade. They raised two daughters, Amy and Angela, and a son, Ethan. Ed graduated from Collins High School and later went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree from Upper Iowa University. Ed was dedicated to serving and protecting his community through various roles in law enforcement. He retired as a Lieutenant with the Ankeny Police Department in 2015.
As an avid outdoorsman, Ed had an appreciation for nature. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time on his acreage, which was known as "the land". He was also a loyal Cyclone fan and loved cheering for ISU in any sport, but especially football. Of all the things Ed enjoyed, spending time with his grandsons was probably his favorite. He was the best Grandpa anyone could ask for.
Ed was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte. He is survived by his wife Jolene, his three children, Amy (Philip), Angela (Dan) and Ethan, two grandchildren, his father William Charles Hamilton Sr., two brothers Nick (Kelly) and William Jr. (Pam), several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The visitation and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Church in Ankeny. The visitation will be on Sunday, August 11th, 2019 from 3:00 - 6:00 pm, with prayer service at 5:30 pm. Mass will be at 10:30 am on Monday, August 12th. Luncheon will be at the church after, followed by burial in Collins at Evergreen Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Flowers or donations may be sent to Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Church 510 E 1st St. The family will direct any monetary donations to Melanoma research at Mayo Clinic, Cops Against Cancer and the EveryStep Kavanagh House.

So sorry to hear this news. Worked with Ed at Iowa Methodist Medical Center prior to both of us beginning our law enforcement careers. Great guy. Undoubtedly will be missed.

As a retired PCSO Deputy I have a handful of men and women I was privileged to work with over a career, who I could trust and know were the best at their craft. Ed is in this group. I will forever cherish the many times we spoke and laughed, discussing our cases. Ed was what every man should strive to be-honest, loyal. faithful, funny, leading. Thank you, Ed, for you.

I am so sorry to hear of Ed's passing. I had the privilege of getting to know and work with Ed at the DEA Task Force in Des Moines. I was fortunate to be Ed's partner. Ed was a consummate professional law enforcement officer and an outstanding investigator. I had the honor of working several high profile cases with him. While working long hours our conversations always turned to his family and his love for them. He always spoke lovingly of Jolene and she was always first and foremost in our conversations, quickly followed by their children. Ed was so proud of his family. Ed was a man of the highest integrity and it showed in everything that he did. Working with Ed was one of the best experiences I had in my career because of the great person and investigator that he was. My sympathies to Jolene and the entire family. You are all in my prayers.
