Tribute & Message From The Family

On June 5, 2019, Daniel A. Olson, 56, of Ankeny died, ending a long struggle and the suffering born of illness.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 10 from 5-7 PM and a Service of Resurrection on Tuesday, June 11th at 10:30 AM, both at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny, Iowa.

Dan is survived by his loving wife of nearly 29 years, Treva (Skeries) Olson; his beloved son, Michael Olson, age 22 ; his brother Timothy (Cynthia); eight nieces and nephews; and his sweet Norwegian Elkhound, Kira. He is also survived by many close friends and colleagues to whom he was a loyal and loving friend.

Dan was born in Glenwood, MN on December 1, 1962 to Vernon (Bud) and Barbara (Bobbie) Olson, who with his younger brother Christopher, preceded him in death. He grew up in Bettendorf, Iowa, where he graduated from high school and attended Scott Community College. Dan is a graduate of Iowa State University.
Most of Dan's working life was spent working in public health. He was a Senior Environmental Specialist for Iowa DNR, in the Wastewater Section where he worked to ensure the safety of Iowa's residents and water. He also worked as a health inspector for Polk County and managed the Public Health Departments in Jackson and Jones counties. Dan was active in the Iowa Environmental Health Association, serving as president in 2002-2003.

Dan loved rock 'n roll, the Iowa State Cyclones, the St. Louis Cardinals, good food and time spent in the company of family and friends. He was an able chef; a man of strong opinions and intelligence. He lived and died on his own terms. He left the world a better place than he found it. Many are blessed by having known him.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Dan taught me a lot at my first intership with the DNR.

I learned a lot from him and he was always optimistic about teaching me.

He always provided kind words in his personal references.

Sad to hear of the passing of my birthday twin and an all around good guy. I worked with Dan for the past 20 years in various capacities and he was a good mentor and friend. He truly cared about doing what was best to improve the environment and never grew tired of sharing his knowledge with others around the state. He will be missed dearly by his work colleagues. Condolences to his family and friends.

So sorry to hear of Dan's passing. He will be truly missed by all. Dan was a great man! He was always there to help and answer the million questions that I think I called him with. Somewhere in the conversation was always a good laugh and a story that he would have to tell. He never got tired of helping anyone, he was always willing to help anyway he could. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

started I would say 10+ years ago!!! He was big into getting our Effluent
cleaned up state wide for our private sewage systems!!!!! He was a fair
person to deal with!!! I consider him a friend!!!! Glen Meyers

I was so sorry to hear of Dan's passing and I want to express my most sincere sympathies to the family during this difficult time. Dan was a highly valuable and respected member of the Environmental field and the effects of his passing are already being felt by his fellow sanitarians.

Dan was a wonderful man. He was always ready to help and went above and beyond what was asked of him. When I first became the Director after Donnie Herteen passed away his advice and assistance to me was so valuable. He made many great contributions to the filed and helped it move forward in numerous ways. His work will not soon be forgotten.

He will be greatly missed and everyone here at ADLM Counties is saddened by his death. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
