Tribute & Message From The Family

Dorothy Ann (Hannam) Donaghy, 84, of Ankeny passed away December 26, 2018.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Catholic Church. A visitation will be held 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., prior to the Mass.

Dorothy was born November 11, 1934 at her parents' farm in Melrose, Iowa, to Mortimer and Margaret (Peg) Hannam. Dorothy attended a country grade school in Melrose and graduated high school in 1952 from nearby Russell. She was very active in high school including playing softball and basketball.

Dorothy worked as a secretary at Hawkeye Security Insurance Company where she met her husband Larry Donaghy. They were married on September 21, 1957 at St. Augustine Church and had 49 wonderful years. They moved to Cedar Rapids, where they had their first two sons, Dean and Brian. After moving to Ankeny in 1962, they added daughter Cindi and son, Joel. They lived the remainder of their life in Ankeny.

She was a founding member of Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Ankeny. Dorothy and Larry were involved in a highly successful effort to raise funds for the construction of the church. She served on the Altar and Rosary Guilds and was a faithful member of OLIH throughout her life.

She was also active in her community, participating in Jaycettes and Ankeny Chamber activities, volunteering at local hospitals in many capacities, and serving on the Ankeny Planning and Zoning Commission. She worked at the polls for many county and city elections, and part time for ManPower. She and her husband Larry worked hard to establish their insurance agency, Donaghy Kempton Insurers. Later, she was a real estate agent for Iowa Realty for a number of years. She and her husband belonged to Ankeny Golf and Country Club for over 35 years and enjoyed socializing with their friends there. They were avid golfers and spent several winters in Arizona where they played frequently.

She loved her friends - playing cards, going to lunch and spending time with them to celebrate life's joy and share sorrows. Most of all, she loved her family. Dorothy was a caring mother to her four children. She was a wonderful, involved grandmother and her grandchildren respected and adored her. She treasured her family as a true blessing.

Dorothy is survived by her twin sister, Dolores (Hannam) Scieszinski and her children: Dean (Amy Roberts) Donaghy of Kansas City, and children, Ashley (Barry) Knowles and Bradley; Brian (Andi) Donaghy of Ankeny, and their children Christi (Stewart) Gillmor, Molly and Amy; Cindi (Kevin) Trevillyan of West Des Moines, and sons Jack and Justin (Stacey); Joel (Jennifer) Donaghy of Des Moines and their children Alison & Will; great-grandson Lake Knowles, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Peg & Mortimer Hannam), her beloved husband Larry; siblings, Jean (Don) Turbot, Sheila (George) Starcevich and Bob (Jean) Hannam, and brother-in-law, Ed Scieszinski.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to O.L.I.H. Catholic Church.
