Tribute & Message From The Family

Joyce Ann "JC" Pennington
October 4, 1943 – November 4, 2018

JC won her courageous battle with cancer and ran straight into the arms of Jesus on November 4, 2018 at the age of 75. She was surrounded by family, as she always loved to be.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 16th at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, IA. A visitation will start at 9:30 a.m. before the service.

Joyce Ann "JC" Pennington, the daughter of Earl and Emma (Powers) Clevinger, was born on October 4, 1943, in South Charleston, West Virginia. She absolutely lived up to her name by sharing joy, love, and happiness with everyone who was blessed to know her. JC graduated from South Charleston High School in 1961 and went on to graduate from Marshall University in 1965. JC was a teacher who positively impacted many students, and later helped start the business Pennington Lawn Service with her husband Denny.

On June 9, 1971, she was united in marriage to Harold "Denny" Pennington. JC and Denny adored one another, and that love was apparent to everyone. Denny brought spark and spunk to JC's life while she brought the gentle and calm voice to Denny's life. Of their life adventures together, she most enjoyed road trips, playing twilight golf, bowling league, boating, and shopping outings. JC, our voracious reader, always had a great book in hand ready to recommend. JC and Denny spent 28 years together in Ankeny, IA, and then retired to the Lake of the Ozarks, MO for 15 years. No matter where they lived, JC treasured her friendships. She was always ready to join a Bridge game, go antiquing, shopping, golfing, sit by the pool watching her kids, whip up a delicious meal, or serve as a listening ear. Her light shined so brightly!

Through her loving 47-year marriage to Denny, the two most treasured blessings of her life were born: Tyra Behnkendorf and Jack Pennington. JC dearly loved and was immensely cherished by her children. She was extremely proud of them and enjoyed cheering them on in all of their endeavors. Serving as an encouraging voice, cheerleader, supporter, or a shoulder to cry on, she was always there for her kids. She taught them all how to sacrificially love with true devotion. Of their many family adventures, she most enjoyed their ski trips to Colorado and spending quality time together. Her life was made complete when she earned the title Grandma. Her 5 grandchildren (Chase, Alanna, Emma, Beau, and Dylan) were the light of her life. She treasured the Grandma life to the full extent of the term Grandma!

Survivors left to mourn her loss include her husband of 47 years, Denny Pennington; two children Tyra (Curtis) Behnkendorf of Grimes, IA and Jack (Pascale) Pennington of Ankeny, IA; her sister Nancy (Dan) Holder of Boston, MA; and five beloved grandchildren - Chase, Alanna, Emma, Beau, and Dylan; a nephew Brad (Anna) Holder and a niece Lindsey (Jesse) Linnell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Earl Clevinger, and grandparents.

As JC loved her animals, memorial contributions may be made in her name to AHeinz57, a no-kill pet rescue and transport in DeSoto, IA.
